How to greet people in Japanese?
Hi everyone,
It's great and fun when I can speak some local language to local people of countries where I can visit. It's fun to learn foreign languages, too.
I hope you can help me to study basic Japanese phrases and sentences which are popularly used in daily life by Japanese people. I will post according to different topics. And if you would like to study English or Vietnamese, I'm willing to help you. Thanks!
Could everyone help me to translate these sentences into Japanese?
1. GREETINGS - Good morning!
- Good afternoon!
- Good evening!
- How are you? + I'm fine, thank you! And you? + I'm fine, too.
- Can you speak English? + Yes, I can. + Yes, I can speak a little. + No, I can't speak English.
- Can you understand English? + Yes, I can. + No, I can't.
- Where are you from? + I'm from Vietnam
- Are you Vietnamese / Japanese? + Yes, I am Vietnamese / Japanese. + No, I am not Vietnamese / Japanese.
- My name is Yuki.
- What is your name?

Re:How to greet people in Japanese?
Hi, I'm Nora, I'm not Japanese but I love anime so I know a bit :) I know that Good morning is おはようございます!(Ohayogozaimasu!) 午後グッド!(Gogo Guddo!) is Good Afternoon Good evening! is こんばんは!(Konbanwa!)
How are you?:お元気ですか?(Ogenkidesuka?) I'm fine thank you! And you?:私は大丈夫です、ありがとう!おまえは?(Watashi wa daijōbudesu, arigatō! Omae wa?) I'm fine too.:私も元気です.(Watashi mo genkidesu) I'll try and reply the rest, hopefully these first few were helpful! :)

Re:How to greet people in Japanese?
Hi Yuki.
I am Enrico. Japanese is not my native language but I am currently learning it at school so I can pass down what I learned from my Japanese teacher to you. I can help you with the translations the sentences you requested, but first, I have two questions to ask you.
1. Do you know how to pronounce the vowel sounds of the Japanese language? 2. Do you know how to write and read in Japanese? (Hiragana & Katakana)
The reason I ask you these two question is because it is important to know how to pronounce words in Japanese. If you don't know how to do the things in the questions I asked, I can teach you that as well.

げんきです! あなたは? (GENKI DESU! ANATA WA?)
+I am fine, too.
わたしもげんきです。 (WATASHI MO GENKI DESU.)
-Can you speak English?
あなたはえいごをはなしますか?
(ANATA WA EIGO WO HANASHI MASU KA?)
+Yes, I can.
はい、わたしはえいごをはなします。
(HAI, WATASHI WA EIGO WO HANASHI MASU.)
+Yes, I can speak a little.
はい、わたしはえいごをすこしはなします。
(HAI, WATASHI WA EIGO WO SUKOSHI HANASHI MASU.)
+No, I can't.
いいえ、わたしはえいごをはなしません。
(IIE, WATASHI WA EIGO WO HANASHI MASEN.)
-Can you understand English?
あなたはえいごをわかりますか?
(ANATA WA EIGO WO WAKARI MASU KA?)
+Yes, I can.
はい、わたしはえいごをわかります。
(HAI, WATASHI WA EIGO WO WAKARI MASU.)

いいえ、わたしはえいごをわかりません。

+Yes, I am Vietnamese.

+No, I am not Vietnamese.
いいえ、わたしはベトナムじんではありません。

いいえ、わたしはにほんじんではありません。
(IIE, WATASHI WA NIHON JIN DEWA ARIMASEN.)
-My name is Yuki.
わたしのなまえはユキです。 (WATASHI NO NAMAE WA YUKI DESU.)
-What is your name?
あなたのなまえはなんですか? (ANATA NO NAMAE WA NAN DESU KA?)
*In Japan, KONNICHI WA can also be translated as "Hello." so you can actually use this phrase at any time of the day.
**I took out the "thank you!" part because you don't necessarily have to thank someone for asking "How are you?" A simple "I'm fine." is fine.

Re:How to greet people in Japanese? Part 3
I would also like to point out that you should only use ANATA when you don't know the name of the person you are talking to. When you do know it, you should replace ANATA with the person's name followed by the honorific -san as it is rude not to use an honorific when addressing someone, especially if they are a lot older than you.
Well, I hope this proves helpful to you. For now, I stuck with the formal/polite way of saying your sentences. If there is something you don't understand or you would like to go further in depth about certain elements of the Japanese language, feel free to reply back to me and I help as soon as I can. It was nice helping you!

Re:Re:How to greet people in Japanese? Part 3
Thank you very much, Nora Do and Enrico!!!
I'm a fan of Japanese anime, too. Actually I fist fell in love with Japan through anime years ago, and now still loving it ^^.
@Enrico:
1. I can pronounce the vowel sounds of the Japanese language 2. Yes, I can write and read Hiragana. Now I'm learing to memorize all the Katakana characters. Will try to finish it this week ^^.
