Re:French- how to say a friend who is a girl
The correct response to your question is "Mon amie" if your friend is a girl and "Mon ami" if he is a boy. As you can spot you make the difference with the added "_e" letter in the feminine case. You do not use Ma amie in order to avoid (as stated above) to say two vowels in a row - in all these cases you keep "mon" and do not use "ma".

Re:mark the boat decks
Here is my two cents. I believe it means to put signs so as to know where to go if you want to reach a given destination. Actually on a large ship there are several decks such as the Upper Deck, the Middle Deck the Lower Deck, etc... and if you want to find your way you use signs posted all over the ship. By extension this idiom "Mark the boat decks" recommends you mark your staff, or files or things or whatsoever so you do not waste time looking for what or where to go.
Cheers, jb

Re:French- how to say a friend who is a girl
bonjour emily tu dois dire mon amie, parce que tu ne peux pas dire "ma" suivi d`une voyelle. Tu dois aussi dire mon "oreille" (my earings) ou mon ombre (my shadow). Bonne chance. Alice

Re:French- how to say a friend who is a girl
Hello! In french, we say "mon amie" and not "ma amie", because it doesn't sound well. We don't use "xxxxa ayyyy". For a feminin word, we always use "ma", but when the following word begins with a voyel, we use "mon"

Re:French- how to say a friend who is a girl
I'm not sure what do you want to say but I'll try to help you. If you're speaking about you friend that is a girl, you should say: Ma amie If you're speaking about your friend that is a boy, you should say: mon ami If you're speaking about your friends that are girls, you should say: mes amies. If you're speaking about your friends that are boys, you should say: mes amis. It does not mind if you are a girl or a boy
