I have no knowledge of the Mandarin language. I would like to learn basic conversation, and how to read a menu ect. I am travelling to Hangzhou China in August with my husband and two children to take an Chinese immersion program. Before I go I would like to learn the basic before I go. I am leaving Calgary at the end of June, and would like to take 2-3 lessons a week for 1-2 hours.Proball y in the evenings.

My objective is to first become conversationa l at the jr. level and gradually recoginise chinese characters.
I will take lesson's predominately in my office in Yaletown.

I lived in Dalian, China for a year and really enjoyed learning Mandarin. I'd say I'm beginner, but maybe at the higher end of beginner. Somewhere between beginner and intermediate :) I took lessons once a week and got plenty of opportunity to practice while I was there, seeing as many people didn't speak English. Since being back in Canada, I tried to take a beginner 2 Mandarin course at the University of Winnipeg, but found it too slow and basic. I want the chance to practice my Chinese so that I don't forget what I already know, as well as advance my abilities. I can recognize some characters, but was never taught any writing skills. But mostly I just want to improve on conversationa l Chinese. One of the problems I had with the U of W class was that we didn't get the opportunity to think for ourselves and really USE the language, it was mostly just 'repeat after me' type stuff. I want a teacher who can challenge me, while using fun and engaging techniques. I can definitely commit to a one to two hour lesson a week, possibly more.
