Hello! I have two primary reasons for learning Korean. The first reason is that, where I live, Korean is one of the most practical languages to speak. Anchorage, Alaska has a large Korean-Americ an population, and many Korean businesses and churches. It's common to see Korean signs on buildings, and in public areas, it's common to hear people speaking Korean. Howe ver, it would be false to say that practicality is my sole reason for learning the language. My main motivation is to be able to understand Korean documentaries , movies, and YouTube videos. Many of my favorite movies and TV shows are Korean, and learning even a little bit of the language has given me so much more understanding and enjoyment of my favorite media. I also know of many high-quality educational Korean YouTube channels with videos on history and science. The vast majority of these channels don't have English subtitles for any of their videos, and I greatly desire to understand them. Of course, there are also many entertaining Korean gaming YouTubers. M y proficiency level is... complicated. I would describe it as 'low intermediate' or 'high beginner'. I have studied Korean on and off since early 2020 - the key part of that sentence, of course, is 'on and off'. I have no trouble with reading or writing Hangul. I've been able to read it for three years, and in fact, I can read it pretty fast. I can conjugate present-tense , past-tense, and assumptive/fu ture tense verbs quite naturally in the three main formality levels. I have an expansive knowledge of different verb endings. I would estimate my vocabulary at 2,000-3,000 words. This may suggest an intermediate or even high intermediate level, but I have one massive problem: I don't actually speak any Korean. I can listen to Korean, read Korean, and write Korean well at an intermediate level, but I have never spoken more than a single word of Korean to a Korean speaker. This is more of a practical issue. It's simply due to the fact that I don't personally know any Korean speakers. Ho wever, it means that my Korean is greatly stunted and essentially useless in the real world. So, as well as improvement of my grammatical and lexical knowledge, what I feel that I need the most from a tutor or a language exchange partner is conversation practice. Id eally, my lesson schedule would consist of one to two sessions a week, which would be between 30 and 60 minutes. I am located in the Alaska Daylight Time zone.
